Take on the challenge of a difficult but rewarding 11.2 mile hike

Experience one of the quietest places on Earth (no helicopters allowed!)

Marvel at the moonscapes accessible only via trail in the center of Haleakala crater

What You'll Do

We start at the summit of the Haleakala, taking in the breathtaking views and giving you amazing photo opportunities. We’ll then head down the Sliding Sands trail, through the crater floor, and up the switchbacks onto the Halemau’u trail. We’ll stop for short breaks every couple of miles and for a longer lunch break at the Holua cabin.

This strenuous hike is not for everyone but the few visitors who take the time and effort to walk this trail are rewarded with the most unique sceneries, going through moonscapes, and one of the quietest places on Earth (helicopter tours are not even allowed to fly above the crater).

Good to Know

  • Guests MUST be able to hike unassisted on varied and rough terrain for 6 to 7 hours, starting at 10,000ft, with an elevation loss of 3,000ft, then an elevation gain of 1,500ft. The temperatures can vary between 30 degrees with wind chill to hot & steamy 85 degrees, and the conditions can go from sunny and hot to freezing pouring rain in a matter of minutes.
  • If you’re unsure, then please book the less strenuous Haleakala Hiking tour(opens in a new tab), on which we can adjust the hiking time.
  • Guests MUST wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, layered synthetic clothing (no cotton, no blue jeans), have a rain jacket, a sweater/hoodie, a hat, and carry a backpack with their pack lunch and AT LEAST 2 liters of water per person—there is a water refill station at the lower visitor center.
  • For safety reasons, we fully reserve the right to modify the hiking plan at any time before or during the tour, and go on two in-and-out hikes (instead of the through 7-hour hike) if the guide considers that a guest does not have the proper equipment or required physical condition to complete the through hike.
